Chaleur Chamber of Commerce Hosts Event with Members to Learn More about Proposed Maritime Iron Facility

Bathurst, New Brunswick (June 26, 2019)

On June 21, 2019 the Chaleur Chamber of Commerce invited Maritime Iron to meet its members and speak about its proposed merchant pig iron production facility, to be located in Belledune, New Brunswick, Canada.

Approximately 60 local and regional business representatives were in attendance to learn more about the C$1.5 billion investment proposed by Maritime Iron, which will create an estimated 1000 jobs during the peak construction period and 200 jobs during operations. In addition, Maritime Iron’s by-product gas can be used by NB Power to significantly reduce its coal use at the Belledune Generating Station allowing it to become compliant with Federal government regulations and remain operational after 2029.

“Maritime Iron is pleased to be working closely with municipalities, Indigenous communities, and businesses in the area to advance this environmentally responsible project and contribute to the long-term prosperity of the region,” said Elena Mantagaris, VP, Communications and Public Affairs at Maritime Iron.

“There is a lot of interest in this project and the economic development opportunities it can bring to the region,” said Jeff Christie, Executive Director, Chaleur Chamber of Commerce. “Our members want to learn about how they can position their businesses to support the successful advancement of this initiative.”
